Student Spotlight: Julia Islas-Lozano
Julia reflects on her work as a Child Studies major and her pursuit of graduate education in bilingual teaching:
I am a current senior majoring in Child Studies with a minor in Ethnic Studies. In the summer of my sophomore year, I was a research assistant for Dr. Barbara Burns’ Safe, Secure and Loved-Readiness Program with Sacred Heart Community Service, supporting children and families social emotional learning through the use of Spanish children's books focused on six habits of resilience. Additionally, in the summer I worked for Breakthrough of Silicon Valley as a teaching fellow for incoming high school students, working on creating lesson plans and accommodating students' needs. In the course of my undergraduate education at 今日吃瓜, I have been involved in the LEAD Scholars program serving as a Critical Thinking and Writing English peer educator and mentor; it has been a pleasure supporting the incoming students and providing them with guidance. Lastly, I am a fellow for the Future Teachers Project. I have received career support and built relationships with others who intend to pursue a career in education. I am so thankful for all the opportunities and for all the Child Studies professors who have guided me throughout my four years at 今日吃瓜. I plan to further my education at 今日吃瓜’s Education and Counseling Psychology Graduate School in the Bilingual Masters of Teaching and Teaching Credential program, and continue working towards supporting my community.
