Internships

Environmental Studies and Environmental Science Majors are required to complete an environmental internship or a directed environmental research experience. This opportunity provides students a practical hands-on experience, a place to apply their education to real-world problems, and a moment to further discern their career pathways.

Internship Criteria:

  • A minimum 100 hours of work, paid or volunteer
  • Internships must be pre-approved to count towards this requirement
  • Work related to environmental, public health, or environmental justice issues (working as a barista does not count)
  • Meaningful work that develops job and/or life skills (more than just clerical tasks, phone canvassing, etc.)

Qualifying Experiences Include:

  • An internship at an environmental organization
  • An internship at a government agency or for-profit business at which there is a sustainability or environmental aspect to the work
  • Internal programs at SCU such as the Center for Sustainability, , or Center for Food Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Research conducted under the supervision of an ESS faculty member, whether paid, volunteer, or for credit
  • Research conducted as part of a study abroad experience, for example by completing the directed research course at

  • Students typically enroll during their 2nd year or 3rd year (at the latest).

  • When you secure an internship or directed environmental research experience, submit an *BEFORE* you begin.
  • The Internship Coordinator reviews the form to ensure the internship aligns with the goals for the ESS internship requirement.
  • **Once the internship is approved, you will receive a confirmation email and can begin your experience. **
  • **If the internship is not approved, we will reach out with further information. Internship hours accrued while the internship is not approved do not count toward your 100-hour requirement.
  • Thoughtfully engage in your internship opportunity.

  • Ask your internship supervisor to send an email to the ESS Department (ess@scu.edu) to verify that you have satisfactorily completed 100+ hours.

    • Internship ends Spring Quarter: Due May 15th for Seniors or last Friday in June for non-seniors
  • This reflection will document your internship and help you examine and reflect upon the experience.

To help you prepare for the internship search and application process, it is recommended that you enroll in ENVS 198 (Environmental Proseminar) prior to seeking your internship. ENVS 198 is a seminar course primarily for juniors and sophomores, intended to permit reflection about vocation, develop skills to obtain an internship or research experience, and foster the development of professional skills.
